Hi Folks,

OK I've installed SP1 a few days ago...with the promise of better
performance...

...can't see any difference at all thus far..

I regularly need to delete very large backup files or move data around
my hard drive.

Copying or deleting files or folders still takes and absolute age.

I'm still resorting to having to reboot back into Windows XP to
undertake file management.

This is quite disheartening to say the least.

Anyone else had a better experiences of SP1 regards this ?

Don't get me wrong, it hasn't made things any worse.. it's just not
made things any better.

Surely this is a pretty fundamental thing for an OS to be able to do.

Jim.

I don't have SP1, but with the original Vista I got a speed improvement in
file operations by disabling Remote Differential Compression. Control
Panel| Programs and Features|Turn Windows features on or off|Uncheck Remote
Differential Compression. I have found no negatives to disabling RDC.
Hope this helps.

OK, that worked ! ..now to research just what exactly Remote
Differential Compression is and figure out whether I need it or not.

Ah, here's a good resource..

http://www.petri.co.il/tweaking_wind...erformance.htm

Seems that Vista is a akin to a swiss army knife with all the blades
and other bits an pieces all unfolded all at once and ready to
use...but each one getting in each others way..

Thanks for the tip.

Massive difference, just copied and deleted some 1GB plus files...in
seconds now instead of days (sic) :-)

Sorted.

Jim.
