Vista Premium: Backup doesn't work

When I try to use the backup and restore program from control panel to create
a file backp on my external hard drive, the backup fails. I get the following
error message:
"Backup did not complete successfully. File backup could not start for the
following reason: Access is denied. (0x80070005).

I am running Norton Internet Security 2008. I have turned off the windows
firewall and stopped the norton firewall.

Anyone run across this and know how to handle it? I don't see any posts
about it.

System Backup is in Vista Business and Ultimate; not Vista Home Premium.

I am the only user, it's a home laptop, not a company laptop so no one else
would have it locked down and I believe I have admin rights. Is it possible I
may not still have admin rights? If so, How can I check and reset that.

Thanks also for the tip. I will try it and let you know if it works.

Mark, I am not skilled or knowledgeable in system management, I am not sure
what impact these changes will have. The problem is, the instructions say the
changes can't be undone without a complete system restore from a backup so it
suggest a full system backup. That would be fine, but the issue I am trying
to fix is that the backup doesn't work! So this is a one shot deal for me. So
what's the risk, what am I changing? The other thing that doesn't make sense
to me is that this is a brand new laptop. All I have been doing is loading
programs and transferring data files from my old machine. I have not
specifically made any changes to any settings.

Does the error message mean access denied to the program, to the backup
drive, or to the files I am trying to backup? Do you know?

PC System backup (complete system backup) yes, but I think Vista Home Premium
does seem to .have a file backup and restore feature It's an option off my
control panel that seems to allow only files to be backed up, not a full
system. It must be something else. Any other ideas?

PS, Vista Home premuim doesn't have a system restore feature, so I would need
to get a backup and restore third party program. Unless you have other ideas,
I may just try that, though I was hoping to avoid it.

I use Acronis Image V11 for backups. Very good utility.

Download an evaluation copy here: 'Acronis Backup Evaluation'

Replace Norton with the free AVG http://free.grisoft.com/ or Avast
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html, and Windows Firewall and Windows
Defender. Disabling Norton is not enough. You need to completely uninstall
it. If it doesn't solve the problem, get rid of Norton anyway (a disaster
waiting to happen) .

I had problems with ATI ver 11, and had to go back to ver 10, which is
working fine.

Home Premium certainly does have System Restore. The shortcut might be
missing from the menu, or maybe you mean an OEM System Recovery utility?

The backup utility can't save to usb flash drives, non-UDF formatted optical
discs, the system/boot disk or network shares on XP Home computers.
