I had the same problem: default printer resetting sporadically. After
a bit of research, I found a post that accurately describes my problem
and a workaround.
I can reproduce the issue at will using remote desktop. The issue is
the RD client is sharing its printers. That tells the Vista RD server
to add new printers (and a new default). Once the RD client
disconnects, one would expect the original default printer to be
restored - but it is not!.
The workaround is to disable the Printers option in the Local
Resources tab of the RD connection window (before clicking Connect).
I still think this is a defect that needs a permanent resolution.
