Vista problems when downloading software?

I've encountered a problem which I'm told is a Microsoft problem, and not the
problem of the third party vendor. I recently purchased a subscription for
McAfee Internet Security Suite (Yes, I'm aware of previous threads slamming
McAfee, so let's not go there).

I had problems trying to download the software onto my Gateway PC, with two
error messages popping up: "Exception address is 00413E6C" and "An exception
'Runtime error' has occurred in script. However, no debuggers are registered
that can debug this exception. Unable to JIT debug."

Research on the MS website to a possible solution led me to download XLM3,
restart, XMLmsi, then restart again and then try to download the software.

Well, it worked up to a point. I seem to have been able to download the
software, but the computer won't install it. I get the same error messages
that I mentioned previously. McAfee tech support points to a Microsoft
problem, not a McAfee problem.

Can anyone offer a possible solution to this dilemma? Yes, I realize in
hindsight that I should have gotten a different security software, like AVG
or NOD32. Fortunately, it's not my computer and I'm not out the money. But
still, I'd hate to leave this hanging.

Thanks.
Sterling

I think you need to go back to McAfee as I'm just incredulous when a third
party vendor makes such a statement. The vendor creates the application to
meet compatibility requirements of the OS, not the other way around. To
clarify, if a patch were issued by Microsoft to cover this specific
application and issue, it has the potential of rippling across the entire
install base, possibly destabilizing other applications. McAfee, can't
figure out what's wrong and stock answer of first line support...it must be
an OS issue.

Applications are designed and developed for the OS, not the other way
around. The OS may have various hooks or functions of which the application
takes advantage but it's up to the application developer to design to those
requirements.

That said, with as many complaints as this newsgroup receives almost daily,
if this in fact were an OS issue, you would find thread after thread listing
such problems. My guess is, there is possibly something else on the user's
system that may be causing some compatibility issue preventing the install.
You might have to start uninstalling other applications one by one and then
seeing if you can install McAfee after each one or tell McAfee, it has been
too much trouble trying to install their app and maybe they'll issue a
refund and you can use AVG, AVAST or something else.
