How old is your laptop? On thing about Vista is older devices have some
problems. If you have specific devices, you may need to download some
new drivers from you laptop maker's site. Take a breath and maybe some
folks can help you get it all working.

Give us you specs on the laptop.

Your machine may be too old, too slow. Vista has been known not to run on
machines with motherboards older than 3 years or so. Before installing Vista
you need to make sure you have plenty of horsepower, more than the minimum
recommendations. Vista runs fine on the right machine. Your wife's machine
probably has a sticker on it which says Windows Vista meaning it is capable
of running Vista. Don't blame Vista for the fact that it won't run on your
old machine which is all probability is not powerful enough to run Vista,
blame yourself for not checking it out before installing Vista.

Regarding the sound quality have you checked the sound card manufacturer's
website to see if they have any updated drivers. The one Vista actually
installed may not be the latest version.

With the update problem are you receiving any error messages prior to the
updates actually rolling back? If not have you tried installing the updates
one by one rather than on-mass.

A few days ago I re-imaged my drive to a new hard drive. The image was from
October of last year because I needed a completely 'clean' image. Obviously
6 months of updates had to be installed. While the updates downloaded fine,
the installation was a disaster. The updates 'supposedly' installed but
after a reboot the updates rolled back and the installation failed. I tried
the install twice with the same result. Now out of the 6 months worth of
updates only one was probably the cause of the problem, my dilemma was,
which one. My solution was to install each update individually, yes it was
time consuming but they all eventually updated without any issue.
Incidentally if you have an update for Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5 service
pack 1 then leave this update until last. I have a sneaky feeling that this
was the cause of my update disaster.

Solution: format your hard drive and install a real operating system
like Ubuntu. Check it out at http://www.ubuntu.com/ It's free and comes
with access to thousands of free programs.

Interesting how you think you know what a machine's specs are with the
only information being that Vista sucks.

There you go again being a complete dick. The guy wants a solution to his
issues with his laptop. If Vista won't work on his laptop because it isn't
up to spec, then he can use XP. He already is using Microsoft products and
NOBODY wants to downgrade to that inferior Ubuntu piece of ****.

Remember, Ubuntu is FREE and NOBODY wants it. Imagine, Ubuntu has been free
for years and still has less than ONE PERCENT of the desktop. That should
tell you right away that it's CRAP.

Idiots like Alias uses it. Enuf said.

And I gave him one.

That is also a possibility but it may cost the OP.

Installing Ubuntu would be an upgrade and quite a sensible one too.

A lie.

Another lie.

It tells me that you're a liar.

Idiots like YOU use Windows but that doesn't mean all Windows users are
idiots.

Clark,

More likely it's a hardware issue than a software problem. I assume SP1 was
installed before any driver updates?
