Vista randomly losing internet connectivity

Hi all. I recently installed Vista Ultimate 64, and one problem I've
noticed is that I will randomly lose all internet connectivity. Here's
the odd thing about it: existing internet connections will NOT drop (ie
I won't get disconnected from my IRC or World of Warcraft session when
this happens), but no new connections can be established. Using the
connectivity repair function does nothing, nor does a release and renew
of my ip. I am however able to pick up a new ip address via
release/renew when this happens. The only thing that fixes the problem
is shutting down and restarting.

Any ideas on what might be going on here would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I just had to change the channel my wireless router was using - I think my
disconnection problems were due to interference from other equipment
broadcasting on same channel frequency. I changed from channel 8 to channel
1 and it now appears stable. May be worth a try?

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I don't have a router... I'm
hooked up to a switch that goes straight to my DSL modem.

"I am hooked to a switch that goes directly to my cable modem" Is your
problem right there!

Are there other systems trying to connect through that switch? Since you are
not using a router I take it you do not have NAT or a DHCP server setup.
Which will try to give each system on the switch a public Ip address. Since
you can only have one IP address it sounds like systems are fighting for
that IP amongst the network.

Either get a router which will do NAT translation and assign private IP's
amongst all computers or setup ICS on one of the systems and route all
internet traffic through that system.

I do have multiple machines hooked up to the switch--but I have enough
IP addresses assigned by my ISP to accomodate all of them. They are
dynamic and assigned via DHCP, and this has never posed a problem in the
past, until Vista. That said, I do suspect that this is a problem with
renewing my lease when it expires. The question is: what and why?

Vista has a new feature in the tcp/ip stack called auto-tuning
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/tec...y/default.aspx

This has been known to cause problems for some people. To turn Auto-Tuning

I'm having KIND of this same problem - all of a sudden ALL the WIRELESS
signals disappear from VISTA. I have about 5 in the neighborhood that I"m
picking up. I can't get VISTA to find ANY of the wireless signals. I have
to reboot, sometimes several times before I pick them all up again.
Its a STRANGE problem. Any suggestions from you smart people out there
would be GREATLY appreciated!
thanks!!

This was happening to my laptops but after a recent Vista update, it got
fixed. I am sorry I do not know which one.

I hope that helps.
