Vista in reboot loop after installing update

After installing an update yesterday (I think .NET 3.5 SP1) Vista is stuck
in a reboot loop. Upon booting it attempts to apply the update, reaches 99%
and then says "shutting down" (but actually restarts). I cannot boot into
SAFE mode either. I see that there is a "last known good configuration"
option in the boot menu but I have not tried it yet, nor have I booted from
the Vista DVD and tried any repair options. I will appreciate any advice
about how to deal with this.

We meet again!

Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP1) when
posting to this newsgroup.

Could this be related to your problem(s) earlier this week? =>
http://groups.google.com/group/micro...466e546590d6bd

If not, briefly see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949358 then see
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/937287 & install KB937287 manually (see
section "Update is available from the Download Center).

Hello PA Bear. Yes we meet again <g>. I don't think this new problem is
related to the previous one we recently discussed. That one seemed resolved
and the PC was working normally. Thanks for the links. I will try the
repair option with the Vista DVD and post back. For the record:

Vista Business x86 SP1 fully patched with all critical and recommended
updates.

I said to only briefly read KB949358, and then download/install KB937287 (if
it will install). If still no joy, then you should consider the Repair
option, please.

Thanks for the clarification, but since I cannot get to the Vista desktop in
either normal or safe mode how would I install KB937287? I'm using a
different OS to access the newsgroups at the moment.

If Last Known Good doesn't work either, you're definitely looking at a
Repair (AKA in-place upgrade).

NB: It is not a good idea to install Vista SP1 manually unless and until
it's offered by Windows Update.

Good luck.

FYI, I restored the partition from a recent image. I'm happy to say that my
image creation/restore software is reliable, which is more then I can say
for Windows Updates at the moment. Use it at your own risk...

Is Vista SP1 still installed?

When you originally installed SP1, did you install it via Windows Update or
manually? If manually, had SP1 been offered by Windows Update yet?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed SP1?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Hello,

I have exactly the same problem with my managers machine. He just installed
some updates and now he gets the loop. He does have SP1 installed and as said
just downloaded and installed the latest updates. I am not sure what to do. I
tried the windows repair before on another computer, but that's as reliable
as updating these days. After trying the repair, the reinstall was necessary.
Sometimes you really wonder if MS actually test their stuff before they
release it and claim it works. Man this is the third problem I encountered
within 2 weeks. Please don't tell me I have to reinstall everything again.

There has got to be a solution for this ...

You are welcome to begin a new thread about /your/ problem instead of
