Other messages indicate that a real Vista boot disk has a repair console
like previous versions of Windows did. I'd like to run that so I can run
CHKDSK /r. The trouble is we bought the machine with preloaded software.
Is there a way to run the Repair Console? TIA

Go to the following website. There is a downloadable ISO file there, based
on the Vista Recovery Environment. (120MB)

Windows Vista Recovery Disc Download:
http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/window...disc-download/

Read the instructions, download the file.

Next, go to this website, read the instructions and download the free
ImageBurn utility. Burn the ISO image to a blank DVD disc.

Burning ISO Images with ImgBurn:
http://neosmart.net/wiki/display/G/B...s+with+ImgBurn

Boot from this disk and you will be able to access all of the Vista recovery
options.

Hi John

I tried burning that file to a CD 3 separate times using ImageBurn and Nero
I just couldn't get it to boot?

This is why I'm recommending burning to a DVD instead. I have had no
problems when using a DVD.

I used Roxio EasyMediaCrator's Creator Classic and it worked fine for me,
CD-RW. Site says CD is ok, but I only made the suggestion in case the OP
didn't have a DVD burner and did have a CD one. These days that's probably
not much of a consideration.

Per your link
You'll need to burn this ISO image to a CD or DVD before you can use it as a
bootable recovery medium.

Thanks. I spoke with Lenovo support and they said if I keep hitting F11
during boot up, it drops into a diagnostic mode (PC-Doctor). I ran "all"
which took almost 2 hours and it found two problems with the hard disk.
I don't know if all Vista installations do this or whether it was
Lenovo-specific.
