Vista resets desktop folders

I change the contents of the desktop folders (e.g., My Computer, etc.)
so that they display with Medium Icons in a small window (i.e., not
maximized). Regardless of whether I click Folder Options -> View ->
Apply or Reset, or do anything else in an attempt to save those
folders' settings, they inevitably become maximized and change the
view to something other than Medium Icons (it isn't consistent). I've
spent a few hours playing with it to no avail. I'm a computer
programmer with over 30 years of experience, and had a sideline job of
fixing/modifying PC hardware and software, but this has me baffled.
MicroSquish's online support was useless (surprise, surprise). Anyone
with a definitive fix (not a guess) to keep the windows as I want them
to be, not as MS wants them, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
