Vista Restarts to intsall update without asking

I was attempting to set up an EDI application on a Vista PC, with some
difficulty, and had just got all working. I attempted to do a data transfer
and part way through the PC flashed up a message and restarted without
giving me a chance to stop it.
The message did say the PC was being restarted to install updates.
I have now lost three orders for £3000 minimum each from the system, and am
having to completely re-install the EDI application to ensure that it is
stable again.
The biggest questions are why the automatic updates think that while I am
working it is safe to restart the PC, and why I can not see a choice to
control this behaviour.
Incidentally, I have noticed some machines bringing up a five minute warning
and counting down. This can be cancelled, but is repeated even though I
might be trying to work on the machine doing some processing that can not be
interrupted without having to start again. There is no option to tell it not
to ask again.
Regards
Dave

See this discussion:

You can configure Automatic Updates such that *you* control which updates
are downloaded, which updates are installed and when. Doing so would avoid
automatic restarts.

<QP>
The center countdown timer [in Vista] starts at 5 minutes. You can Restart
now, or Postpone the reminder by 10 minutes, 1 hour, or 4 hours. (In Windows
XP, you can postpone for 10 minutes).

There is one exception – a system administrator can deny your rebooting
privileges. For user accounts without rebooting privileges, Windows Update
disables the Restart now button. You can still Postpone, or your system
will automatically reboot after 5 minutes.

Robear,
Thanks for that lot.
Very bad form as far as I'm concerned, that the first I know of the problem
is when the machine automatically reboots during a critical operation. Much
better form to default to asking the user/administrator if they want that
behaviour ahead of time.
Hope Microsoft have a good think about this. There are a large number of
users out there who just want to use the PC, not have it kill their work in
mid calculation or whatever.
Anyway, I'll look at the information you supplied, and make sure I advise
all my clients in future.
Regards
Dave

You're welcome. MS makes the tools and setting available. All your clients
have to do is inform themselves and use them.

Yes, but how long did it take you to find all this out?
Now think how long it would take an artist.
And I have several clients who are absolute wizards at using Word, for
instance, but don't have the time to learn all the ins and outs of
installing and configuring Windows, and would anyway only do it once or
twice per version of Windows. And they have to know that the question needs
to be asked.
This could develop into one of those long philosophical conversations, so
I'll leave it there.
Again, thanks for your comments.

Did the artists emerge out of their mothers' wombs being able to produce
prize-winning works without having to learn anything? I don't think so.

A computer is not a "plug & play" telephone or a TV.
