vista restore

When I first got vista ulimate working o.k. I made a backup on a seperate
sata hard drive now when I want to restore the complete hard drive I ran the
installation cd went to restore your entire computer but got Windows complete
pc restore "no valid backup location could be found" yet the backup file is
on the sata hard drive What am I doing wrong??
