I have Vista Business, latest patch.

In Vista Search I specify location: Local Hard Drives (C, searching
for file "*.837". Search finds one SHORTCUT in my Recent items folder.
That's not right...

I bring up the command prompt and from C: I do "dir/w/s *.837". Guess
what, my files are right there in C:\Users\Me.

WTF Microsoft?!?! Do I have to go back to command line search to find
files now?

My Advice: disable the search indexing service

This is probably a side effect of the "Virtualization" system,

I think that is tech speak for "A faster and more comprehensive way to
lose things".

Also check your hard drive's properties and uncheck "Index this drive"
since that becomes worse than useless too. Slows you down plenty put
still can't find anything

".837" is not a normal file extension, and thus won't be indexed, unless you
add it to the Indexing options.

What happens if you try searching for "ext:.837"? I renamed a file to have
a .837 extension, and search found it immediately.

You go to the Advanced Search and check on *Include non-indexed, hidden and
system files*. I too thought that the Vista's Search was painful and
couldn't find any thing, until someone posted about enabling the Include
function on the Advanced Search. Actually Vista's Search is cool and I was
cussing it out for nothing.
