Service packs typically are not released so soon after the release of an
operating system. They are large-scale collections of hotfixes that have
been released since the operating system came out, and in some cases--such
as XP SP2--contain modifications or feature additions for the software
itself.
The update MS was referring to would have been a specific hotfix to resolve
the issue. You could contact Microsoft Product Support services this week
to determine exactly the update you require and if it was in fact released,
but they weren't referring to a service pack.
