Vista Sevice Packs

Can anyone tell me the truth about Vista sevice packs:
1. How may are there.
2. Is it true that installing them leads to more problems than before
installing them?

No problem. Glad to help.

There is only SP1. I have had it installed since it was released and while
it doesn't fix the stuff I hate about Vista I have had fewer technical
issues. Like it works better with my three monitors and two video cards. I
have less trouble with it forgetting the resolution on my 30" screen.

Vista is still cr@p and always will be. Microsoft as usual designed for the
idiots in the world instead of real user's.

Unlike Apple which uses a "closed" hardware system thereby controlling
development much more strictly, the PC world to it's credit uses a
"open" system where there is a army of hardware manufacturers each
vying for a share of the huge personal computer market. Because of
that all versions of Windows have a constant struggle keeping up and
working up to speed and addressing issues as the pop up. When you
combine that sobering fact with Microsoft needing to address the
deluge of "bugs" being constantly found in it's bloated versions of
Windows it is no wonder how many patches, hacks and Service Packs
there are floating around to entice you.

How many are there? I have no idea. A better question would be how
many do you actually need. That question can only be answered by each
individual user since some patches and elements of Service Packs only
pertain to some hardware.

The old metaphorical "...if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it"
applies. Meaning simply if your particular install seems to be working
correctly don't haphazardly install some "patch" or Service Pack. You
can make things worse. Way worse as many have sadly found out to their
regret. This advice is easier followed when installing some so-called
individual security update that comes with a linked KB article most
times describing just exactly what the patch is suppose to correct or
prevent from happening.

Sadly when applying a Service Pack which is mostly a collection of
prior released individual patches you assume the risk of using such a
sledge hammer approach. So applying a Service Pack may make your
system overall better and even correct something that was wrong, but
you also run the risk of messing something else up that prior to the
patch was working properly. That's just how it is. You really don't
know, so you're rolling the dice.

Before making any major changes to your computer and certainly
applying a Service Pack can be considered a major change, be sure you
have current backup of your critical data, especially if you store
some or all your data on the same partition that Windows is on,
generally a poor idea, but many people do, because that's where
Windows expects and actually encourages you to store data which I
never understood. Better safe then sorry.

There have been a lot of people who have had problems after installing SP1,
which is the only SP for Vista. There have also been some who have not had
problems. Don't forget, people hardly ever report when there are no problems
but yell like crazy when there are. I installed SP1 and it totally
stabilized my machine. I went from daily crashes to 1 crash since March,
which was my fault anyway.

So, the bottom line is your mileage will very.

Currently there is only one Vista service pack...SP1. It contains all
previous updates and a few new ones. You should install it because
future Vista updates may require it being installed before new updates
can be installed.

Of course not. The idea is nonsense. Whenever anything new comes
out--whether it's a service pack, an individual hotfix, or a whole new
operating system--there are always a certain number of people who have
problems with it--because they've installed it wrong, because they
have an unusual combination of hardware components, because they are
uninfected with malware, or because of any of a number of other
possible reasons. Yes, you see problems when searching the internet;
the people with these problems are the most vocal because they are the
ones who are looking for solutions to their problems. But the great
majority of people have no problems at all.

Vista SP1 works just fine here, as do all three service packs I've
installed on my XP machines.
