Vista Shortcut Repair Sucess

Here's another fix that can be appended to the book "10,000 Vista bugs
and how to compensate for them":

I created a desktop icon to an application file on a shared drive a
month ago. I use it several times a day. The shortcut worked fine
until yesterday then it stopped working. Dbl-click on it and nothing
happens at all. I've already shut off UAC and changed Vista to
recognize the shared drives as Local so that I can access programs and
files without issues, so that wasn't the problem. Also, it did work
fine for a month.

I checked the Properties, it all looked fine. Security looked fine, I
had full control. I created a new shortcut using the right click
option on the shared drive, then copied the new one to the desktop.
The shortcut worked on the shared drive, but not when I moved it to
the desktop. I created shortcuts on the same drive for other files and
found the same characteristics - they only worked while on the network
drive, not when on the desktop.

The fix? I had to go in and take ownership of it. Then it worked fine
(again). It didn't seem to matter that I created it and/or that I had
full control over it already, or that this wasn't a problem a couple
days ago. I had to be the owner for it or any other similar shortcut
to work... regardless of the fact that this was not a requirement last
week.

Ah... the joys of Vista's alleged security.

Thanks for the accolades Chuck! I know that you're just poking fun and
in reality you were able to extrapolate the larger implications as to
how this workaround strategy could be used to solve other Vista
security problems.

I mean, after all, ignoring those implications would be positively
foolish. You couldn't possibly be that doltish.
