Vista Shut down issues

So far I like Vista, everyting seems to run smoothly, except shut down.. When
I choose to shut down Vista it takes on average 5 minutes to complete.. Start
up is no problem.. For software all I have installed was my antivirus AVG,
Adobe Reader, drivers for my video card, mouse and keyboard.. What can be the
problem, and will the first service pack have a fix for this.. Thanks..

Hi,

This sort of problem usually occurs when an application or process does not
properly respond to the terminate signal. Whether or not a service pack
would fix it would depend on what the problem actually is and whether or not
the SP addresses it, but likely it would not as they usually only address
problems in the system itself, not with third party programs (which are
nearly always the cause). Before shutting down, hit ctrl+shift+escape to
access task manager. Make sure nothing is running on the applications tab.
Then check the processes tab and 'end task' on some of them. Then try to
shut down. If the problem still occurs, then you haven't terminated the
right one yet. Repeat, but this time choosing a few different ones (don't
worry, as Windows will not allow you to terminate system critical ones).
Repeat until you isolate the one that is causing the problem. Once you know
which one it is, then you can work towards correcting it.

usually, for me anyway, there is a message on screen that says what is holding up the process.

Vista keeps detailed logs of startup, shutdown and other performance data.
In the Start Search box type eventvwr.msc and press the Enter key.

eventvwr.msc => Applications and Services Logs => Microsoft => Windows =>
Diagnostics-Performance => Operational

Look for events in the Shutdown Performance Monitoring category. Each event
will tell you how long in milliseconds the program or driver took to shut
down. Anything that is unusually long should generate an event.

There seems to be a lot of critical issues I found most seem to do with
microsoft itself.. One is with the logitech drivers for my keyboard/mouse the
one that stands out is the cthelper.exe I believe it is called.. How do we
fix these issues..

I believe that cthelper.exe is from Creative.

Ok but when I try to end the service it won't end.. I quess I can try to
uninstll some of these drives and see if that helps.. Also is there a way to
send MS these events so hopefully it will help them to come up with solutions
in the future...

1. Control Panel > Problem Reports and Solutions, check for solutions, view
problem reports, right click problem and view problem details

2. Run msconfig and disable cthelper.exe

3. Delete cthelper.exe from the Run command in the registry by using regedit (or
disable it by placing a semicolon in front of the value)

I unistalled my creative drivers and disable the cthelper.exe in msconfig..
Went to creative and they don't support vista yet.. Now Vista shuts down with
no issues.. Can you still install the drivers and disable cthelper.exe and
still get sound?

Creative doesn't support Vista?
What card do you have?
I don't have any problems (x-Fi), but I do believe that you can disable cthelper
and still get sound from what I have read here.
