Vista Shuts Down Unexpectedly For Updates

I've had my laptop running Vista for well over a year. Recently it has
started shutting down unexpectedly in order to restart and install updates.
It used to ask permission -- but now it just goes ahead and shuts down.
Suggestions?

Just out of curiosity
Are you running Vista Enterprise or Vista Ultimate?
Are any Service Packs installed?
Any MUI packs running?

Or

Are you running Home Premium or Business?
Service Packs installed?
Any LIPs packs running?

It's Vista Home Basic. I *think* I've got all service packs installed.
Don't know what LIP packs are -- or if I've got them running.

That can happen if you have another update which is being blocked from
being downloaded "by regulation". Look in your WindowsUpdate.log
and ReportingEvents.log for this possibility and see other previous
discussions about this where those terms are used.

Vista SP2 Installation Tips:

• Your computer will restart several times during the installation process:
Make certain you've saved your work and closed all open applications before
beginning the install.

• Disable (1) your anti-virus application, (2) any real-time system
protections afforded by any anti-spyware applications (except Defender), &
(3) your third-party firewall (if any) and then (4) enable the Windows
Firewall _before installing or uninstalling_ Vista SP2.

• The installation process can take an hour or much longer, depending on
server demand. If you're installing SP2 on a portable computer, make sure
that you plug-in the power cord and have the battery inserted into its bay.

• Vista SP1 is a prerequisite for installing SP2. If you use Windows Update
or the Automatic Update feature in Windows Vista, you will not be offered
the option to install SP2 until you first install SP1.

Windows Vista, but only for Service Pack 2 (SP2). This support for Windows
Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) is valid until November 26, 2009. Availability of

when microsoft flags an update as 'critical' it will force xp and vista
(maybe others??) systems to reboot within a couple minutes unless you stop
them... i highly recommend setting windows update to download but not
install unless you can handle unattended reboots at any time.

These talk about registry settings or policies to stop it, but just
selecting download but don't install is easier.
