Vista slow internet

I'm running two machines on a network with a D-Link Router attached to the
internet via a Hughesnet HN7000S Satellite Modem. My ISP service should be
around 1000kbps down and 200 up. I'm actually getting in the 500 to 700 range
down on my XP Pro machine and consistently around 200kbps less on my new
Vista Ultimate machine. My upload speeds are around 15 to 30 on the XP and 12
to 18 on the Vista. Obviously part of my problem is Hughesnet (my ISP) but
why would Vista be consistently slower than XP on the same network and same
modem?

I had that problem, and got better performance with half duplex on the
properties of my ethernet card. Have no idea why.

I have a dual boot computer. When running XP upload and download speeds are
similarly faster than when running Vista on the same hardware and router. No
amount of tweaking of settings makes much of a dent in Vista, and I have
tried just about everything.
I have a suspicion that many hardware drivers forVista are essentially half
baked, particularly motherboard drivers, so that with the wrong mix there is
no way to get optimal performance.
Also, Vista is itself half baked and it is not clear that the latest SP1
revision can get Vista to run anywhere near XP speeds. The first public SP1
did absolutely nothing to improve Vista performance. It remains to be seen
if the latest SP1 actually does anything to make Vista worthwhile, as
opposed to barely usable.

Thanks Mark,

If you're talking about changing the settings on the network adapters in
Device Manager, I've done actual speed tests with both full and half duplex.
Didn't seem to make much difference any way they were set.

It's funny that my speeds on and off the router are better than my fiancé's
XP box. Without any tweaking at all. Not sure what your problem is, but it
is certainly not with Vista.

laptop.
*PC * *laptop*
PentiumIII(1999) Dual core

*Internet speed*
5376 kb/s Down 4001kb/s Down
448kb/s Up 373kb/s Up

I am very confused with the performance of a new machine with Vista and
an old one, could some one put me out of my misery. Thank you.
