Vista slow start-up

Hi,

I have a fairly decent machine: a T2400 duo core with 2gb of ram and
an ATI x1600 mobile video card. Recently i upgraded from XP to Vista
Premium. I installed a 2gb SD card to be used by ReadyBoost and
Diskeeper is keeping my harddisks defragged. Trend Micro Internet
Security is keeping my pc free from malware and virusses. When i
check performance with the products from Futuremark, i have a high
score within my spec group.

When I start the laptop and I see the last BIOS info and Vista starts
loading, then i have to wait a full 6 (six!) minutes before i can open
my first application (for example Outlook or IE or whatever).

My question: is this normal? It seems like a mighty long time,
considering the specs and the good maintenance of the system. What do
you guys think about this?

Thats way too long, run msconfig and do a select Diagnostic startup for
the general tab, see if boot time gets back to "normal".
If it does then renable half of the startup that were disabled then
reboot, any recurrence of the lag will indicate the culprit is
within that group.
Disable half of them, you get the idea I think.

6 mins is not normal

I wonder if you have Trend Micro doing some sort of scan/update at startup
or one of your other programs like ReadyBoost /and Disckeeper are taking
time to load
or complete some task

I tried using Vista's built-in startup-manager, but i could only see
the startup programs, not remove or disable them?
I'll try with msconfig.

FYI, my laptop
Intel Pentium M 1.6Ghz
Intel 915GLE Chipset
1.24GB Ram (1.5gb but 256mb in use by graphics)
60GB 5400RPM Drive, takes about 2 mins,

quick way for me to compare with you is on the boot count how many times the
green bar scrolls from left to right, i count 9 to 11 depends on what i have
plugged into usb ports

On the Start menu click on Help and Support. Type in "slow startup" without
the quotes and press the Enter key. There are some good troubleshooting tips
in here. #3 has some really good tips. Windows keeps very detailed logs of
startup and shutdown problems. It will point out problem programs and even
tell you how many milliseconds it took to load or unload them.

If you are connected to a network with a domain controller make sure you
have the DNS pointed at the right place. Which would be your networks dns
controller not your ISP's.

I have found the cause for the extreme slow startup!!
==> SUPERFETCH! Although Superfetch was created to speed things up,
on some systems it is reported to slow things down while starting
up. I save a little more than 4 minutes now when booting after
disabling the superfetch service in Vista!! Less than two minutes to
boot and startup and use my first application!!
