Vista sound has changed

Something has changed the sound setup on my computer, and I think it must have been one of the updates. I have auto updates enabled.
Now when the cursor is put on the speaker icon it shows "high definition audio device", and when I select recording devices, it shows 2 microphones and line input.
It used to show the 3 rear input jacks and the 2 front ones. ( I had Home Basic, and upgraded to Home Premium, but this change occurred before the update.)
I am very unhappy with this!
If I install a PCI sound card, will the card then handle all sound, or will the stupid High Definition Audio Device" still rule?

Do you remember what your audio adapter originally was? Do you have any
documentation? Have you gone to your computer manufacturer's web site?

If you install a PCI sound card, turn off built-in sound in your BIOS.
Install the drivers for the new sound card. You will then have the
capabilities the sound card provides. Make sure you pick a sound card with
drivers you need for Vista, 32-bit ore 64-bit.

No, I can't remember what was shown originally, where High def.audio device now shows.
One update was for SigmaTel high def. audio codec, but that killed the sound entirely, cursor on the speaker icon then showed "no audio device installed". Had to system restore back before the update, then sound was back.
I haven't checked computer mfg. (emachine), but will.
Still wondering if a sound card would solve my problems. Everything except dialup modem is on the motherboard.

If you install a Vista compatible PCI sound card it will definitely solve your
problems.

You should investigate how to disable the onboard audio adapter first before you
install the add in card to completely get rid of it.

How do I get into bios in Vista? I tried F10, which works in XP but here I got about 4 choices to select from, and don't know what they are.

The BIOS is entered before you get to the operating system. It is accessed
during POST (Power On Self Test) and on most of my BIOS's has been entered
using the delete key during POST. If that key doesn't work, consult your
manual or if you see the POST test, it is at the bottom of the screen.

During boot up there is "usually" a message on the initial splash screen that
might say something like: Press F1 to enter Setup, or something similiar (esc,
etc). It flashes by very quickly.
