There's a lot about Vista SP1 in the news these days. Now, I've been
getting automatic updates since I have had Vista. Do I need to even pay
attention to SP1, or have the periodic updates taken care of everything?

When you think you should have it, go to start/.../run: and type:
WINVER
If you only have version 6.000 you don't have it yet.

This one Ernie has been answered before but, if you have Windows Updates set
to automatically download he SP1 will be offered as a download (or partial
download, if you system is currently up to date with update patches). Yes,
you may be fully updated but you don't have all the contents of SP1 on your
system. Some time in March (or thereabouts) Windows Update will download the
SP1, all you have to do is install it.

What do you mean: will they stop you working without asking your permission
(as usual), or will you be invited politely to accept, refuse or defer the
offer?

Has the 64bit build been released yet of SP1? I know the 32bit has.

You will get it through automatic updates. You don't need to do
anything special. It should be around the middle of March.
