Vista/SP1/cdrom.sys problems and I need some HI OCTANE Help...! Please!?

Hi,
I don't know what caused it to happen because it's been so long ago.
It might have been when I installed SP1. Anyway, my DVD\CD RW drive
simply stopped working. I went into Device Manager - there was no "?"
or "!" to be seen, however when I checked the DVD drive info, it said
Vista could not load the driver - cdrom.sys - because it was corrupt.

In desperation, I finally contacted Gateway - a major mistake...!

Again in desperation, I decided to uninstall the driver since it
wasn't doing me any good anyway, and hoping Vista would "see" the
problem and look in SP1 download for it, install it, and all will be
well.

Well, it didn't. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can install the
correct cdrom.sys - there are a lot of 'em out there on the Net - on
my Vista system? I've tried re-installing SP1 and all it says is that
SP1 is already installed.

Opppssss...! I have another question. When I installed SP1 on my
other Vista unit, somehow, every since then it has asked me for my
password when it is beginning to boot. How to I remove that so that
it will simply boot?

Hi Medicine Man; here are my Rxs:

These should take care of getting the cdrom.sys file registered in your
system. Often just downloading a file does nothing because it has to be
registered, and sometimes regsvr32 commands don't get it done--depends on
the file.

Try running SFC. Type cmd in search box above start>when pops up>rt.
click>run as admin>at cmd prompt type sfc /scannow.

If no joy there, try a startup repair which MSFT bills as for no boots, but
I've seen fix systemically broken Windows Vista components many times.

If you need to repair major components of the Vista OS or can't boot, and
don't have a Vista DVD, you can download the .iso from this link and burn
it:

1) First try 3 options from Startup Repair. If you have a Vista DVD then
restart with it in the drive>press any key to boot from it and run Startup
Repair. From Startup Repair you have 3 good tools with an excellent chance
of fixing your system. If you don't have a Vista DVD from which to boot to
Startup Repair, no problem, Download the .iso from the link below and
burn it, and you'll have the Microsoft Vista Repair Disk with Startup
Repair.

If Startup Repair does get things fixed , then use the 3 bootrec
commands from the command prompt available on the Statup Repair Menu:

Many "Thanks," Chad. I'll have to do this later tonight or maybe even
tomorrow sometime as I've been gone all day today and am about to
leave again in a few minutes, and tomorrow looks hectic as well. I
didn't get an operating system disc from Gateway with this particular
unit although I did get operating system disc (Vista 32 bit) with my
older unit.
