VISTA SP1 Error 0x800F0286 during SP1 Upgrade

Hi,

On an HP laptop running VISTA Home Premium 32 bit I cannot apply SP1. I get
an 0x800F0286 error right at the end. I have seen the fix for this and it is
to make 2 services automatic. They are Windows Event Collector and Windows
Module Installer. I am running as an admin and set these to Automatic. Now I
also run msconfig to disable all the non MS services and try again. It still
fails but the Windows Module Installer is set back to Manual. I recently
upgraded the Windows Installer to the 4.5 version but the upgrade still
fails. I can install all other patches using Microsoft Update but not SP1.

I feel I could change Windows Module Installer to have a dependency to
something that is automatic to ensure it starts but I am at a loss to
explain why the setting gets changed back. I thought that it might be
Microsoft Update but I am not so sure.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Chris

I assume Windows Update is offering the machine SP1.

0x800F0286 is an error totally unknown to me.

Unlimited installation and compatibility support for Vista SP1 is available
at no charge through 18 Mar-09

I'm not going any further with this as I have seen in HP groups that my
laptop appears to have problems with VISTA SP1 upgrade. It is an DV9000
series one.

Thanks

Chris
