Vista SP1 not offered - something else then the 8 causes?

Hello,

for me the SP1 in Vista (32 Home Premium) is not offered in
WU, but I cannot find out why, especially not within the eight
reasons stated in KB948343.

1. no
2. German is released
3. not installed
4. - see below -
5. not the mentioned ones on my system
6. no
7. no
8. no

I was able to install SP1 with the standalone package, but had
blue screens during and after install. On first attempt install
failed and made rollback, so after that I checked files (chkdsk)
and registry (sfc /Scannow) for integrity (like suggested
somewhere on MS site). SFC stated problems, but I wasn't able
to find terms inside CBS.log like "corrupted" and especially
not "Cannot repair" within period of sfc test, like suggested
in KB928228.

Second attempt after these testings and repairing had also one
blue screen (I guess it was 0x0000007E, not sure) after phase
2 of 3, but then it went through and I had a working SP1 system
(really seeing some little advantages). But now on boot I had
much more blue screens (0x00000007 this time for sure) than
successful boots. I removed many old or invalid entries in
device manager with no success, so in the end I went back to
restore point of SP1.

So in the end my question is, how can I find out what is the
problem on my system? WU seems to know but it does not tell.
How does it indicate to offer SP1 or not? Is this logged
somewhere?

I don't think this problem will go away with some kind of
magic, so wave one will hit me suddenly.

Regards,
Thorsten

Perhaps it won't be in English on your version?
Did you look for German equivalents too?

Looks like you have some problems with your drive?

Did you look in the WindowsUpdate.log (ref. KB902093)?
You might see it there associated with the term "regulated"

Do you have KB938371 installed?

BTW you're more likely to get assistance for these symptoms in Vista-specific newsgroups
and forums (perhaps even German ones too). Cross-posting for convenience.

Good luck

chkdsk was applied before, 88 GB free. It's looking quite
fragmented, but I cannot really believe that's the reason?
I'll do a defrag. A bit cryptic, this SHTDN_REASON...

I see several "is 'Priority' regulated and can NOT download",
but I cannot see relation to anything looking like "Service
Pack 1". Does anyone give me some more advise how to find the
relevant entries?

Found such entry in WU log ("Success") and I have no pending
updates appearing in WU.

Sorry, my provider does not offer that specific group. I cannot
post there (using my regular client). When you take a look
around, there are a lot of Vista-SP1 questions in here, is it
ok to stay only here?

I also think it's part of WU issue, I still would like to
know how WU indicates not to offer SP1. It seems to know
something I also would like to know.

After my initial posting I also found a reference to MS mail
support in here, so I mailed the same to it as well, already
got answer (should try to install full download in safe mode,
but had no success either) and after that I sent several log
files to them.

I will wait for finding a understandable and fixable reason
or their response before my next attempt of SP1 install, as it
always takes hours.

Thanks,
Thorsten

Absent any other Errors in your windowsupdate.log, you may be seeing a delay
caused by excessive demand on the servers. Try again later.

Agreed.

In that case, you may be able to see signs of something being suspended
(in a cmd window) using:
bitsadmin /list /allusers /verbose

Sure. But if you kept the cross-post active you would have the benefit
of Vista helpers seeing this thread, even when you can't see that newsgroup
from your server.

Also, is there any reason why you can't use the msnews news server
for accessing these Microsoft newsgroups? msnews.microsoft.com

Good luck

no, there is no reason at all. Take a look at this header. I'm
really sorry, I have not seen this.

Everything else tomorrow, or after the easter weekend ;-)

To put this thread to an end, I finally got help from support
(really nice), they analyzed some of my logs and finally it
was a driver ("slnt7554.sys" from "MicroLink 56k Fun USB"
modem) that was not ready for Vista.

This driver is not listed in KB 948343, and I still don't know
another way to find such problem other than support, which is
some kind of sad. Error messages and logs really should be more
meaningful.

But in the end my system is SP1 now, and also SFC does not find
any more errors now.

Wellllll....looks like I will be contacting support. I have been relying
soley on the information from the KB and wondering why my system was not
updating. So, there may be a driver that is installed that is not listed on
the KB. Well, I suppose I will contact them on Monday!
