Vista SP1 with Outlook 2007 "Not Responding"

Just FYI....
I only posted this here because the issue appeared only after SP1 update. In
case anyone else sees this.

After installing SP1 I found that my Outlook 2007 would go into "Not
Responding" mode after being open for an hour or so. This did not happen
pre-Vista SP1. The Outlook process could not be ended via Task Manager. Only
a reboot using the hardware switch would work. Shutdown would stall. Ugly.

I had been using my .pst file via a mapped drive (the .pst was actually
located on a network 2003 server, not the local Vista machine). Some of you
may know that MS has never supported a remote .pst file. However, this sort
of configuration is not uncommon in the Enterprise due to the ease in which
..pst files can be baked up on the server. Also, I was still running the
"Win98-2002" .pst file format.

Fix: Reconfigured the .pst file to be on the local drive in the default
location (i.e. C:\users\<profilename>\appdata\local\Microsoft\Out look) using
the newer "2003-2007" Outlook format and imported the old .pst into the new.
No more "Not Responding" issues with MS Outlook.

Your post should benefit a lot of people, who may or may not know they have
this problem.

Thanks,

As posted probably at least once a day in the Outlook groups - do NOT use
the import/export function to transfer native Outlook Data.
Why not?
(Courtesy of Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook])

Importing an entire PST may well corrupt your profile and may create a ghost
PST that you can't close. Importing PST's will lose:
1. Custom Forms
2. Custom Views
3. Connections between contacts and activities
4. Received dates on mail
5. Birthdays and anniversaries in calendar
6. Journal connections
7. Distribution Lists

Opening a PST file will preserve all of these. That is why we do not advise
people to import a native file into Outlook.

Actually, there may be other fixes. This just happens to be the one I used.
I suppose it could be an issue with the newer SP1 file handling (i.e. RDC),
or RSS feeds, or something to do with maintaining connectivity on mapped
drives. Possibly an adjustment relating to those might fix it too. I just
took the path of least resistance for me...LOL. Since I don't need a remote
..pst like I used to.

There is no other way to convert from a 97-2002 .pst format to a 2003-2007
format, according to MS. And you are right... I did have some issues. But I
was able to successfully resolve them.

Try this from the Microsoft Vista trouble shooting site at Microsoft.
was having the same symptom and also had my pst on a network driv
which became unavailable when Vista Sp1 turned off my network adapter

Windows might be turning off your network adapter to save power. Tur
off the power-saving option in the network adapter's properties (wire
network adapters only)

1. Open Network Connections by clicking the *Start* butto

clicking *Control Panel*, clicking *Network and Internet*, clicking
*Network and Sharing Center*, and then clicking *Manage network
connections*
2. Right-click the connection, and then click *Properties*

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, typ
the password or provide confirmation
3. On the *Networking* tab, click *Configure*
4. On the *Power Management* tab, clear the *Allow the computer t
turn off this device to save power* check box, and then click *OK*
