I have been waiting for Windows Update to offer SP1 and it has not happened
yet. I am in no rush for SP1, but am beginning to wonder if it will ever be
automatically offered. Should I continue to wait, or should I manually
download it from the MS site. My concern is the update process might know
something about my system that could cause me problems after a manual
download. Any input would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Accessing the winupdate page directly will still check your sys for
applicable updates, before it offers anything.

If your system is currently stable, don't rush it. With Vista, if it ain't
broke don't fix it.

It does not take an MVP to point you to this web page. ;-)

If you only want an answer from some MVP, then you deserve the
misinformation you'll likely receive.

There are at least a couple possibilities.
1. MS is spacing it out to avoid overloading the server, and
2 Read the article Charlie42 mentioned:
Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is not available for installation from Windows
Update and is not offered by Automatic Updates
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948343
3 If you've been keeping up to date there's certainly no rush.

How do you mean "if it ain't broke"? Vista was released 'broke' and has
been in need of a fix ever since (still is) - have you tried copying
files disk-to-disk?

No, I haven't tried that in Vista. All of my important stuff stays in XP and
always will. I don't trust Vista. By "ain't broke" I mean not crashing,
freezing, and no boot problems.

Just be patient - you just don't have all the pre-requisite updates
yet, but they'll come (automagically too), and once you do,
SP1 will show up. I started a similar thread (or maybe just hopped
onto one) a couple of months back, and last week, SP1 showed up.
After all this waiting and to finally have it, I still have NOT installed
it.

Then why did you bother to download it?

SP1 can be download from Microsoft's web site and installed like any
other update. I suspect Microsoft didn't want to overload their
servers so they didn't make it automatically part of Update to more
than a portion of users at a time. Of course if you knew where to look
for it on Microsoft's site ANYONE could have downloaded a copy months
ago. Proving once again the information in this newsgroup which
suggested SP1 was not yet available was of course totally bogus like
much of the other slop posted here.

Not true. When you download the entire SP1 package it will do the same
thing Update would have...only install what your particular system
needs.

One word of caution. This is a BIG service pack. It takes awhile to
download and even longer to install. At least a couple times during
the install it will appear your system is hung up. It isn't! Just be
patient and wait for it to finish. The worse thing you can do is
interrupt things before it is done and then for sure you really will
end up with a royally messed up system.
