Vista SP1 still fails

I get the same error... goes along fine, reboot stage 1of 3... reboot, then a
black screen of death saying my ntokernerl file is missing or corrupt.. run a
repair, reboot same thing... Had to rename the c:\windows\winsxs\pending.xml
file to get the system to run again...

Any ideas?
