Vista SP1 - stuck on stage 3

I am trying to update to SP1 for windows vista my computer is stuck on stage
3 and has been for 3 hours - it advised do not turn the computer off. It says
the download of stage 3 is 100% complete but it will not do anything else.
What should I do. I am using myt sons laptop.
