Vista sp1 update reverts after install

Several trial of sp1 install. Gets all the way through, then says, "Update
failed to install. Reverting changes." Error code: 80004005. What's wrong?

Which machine? If a Dell, there is a known problem with the SigmaTel
drivers which will do that. Happened to me.
