Vista SP1 Windows Update unresponsive

I'm running a fairly new computer that came with Vista SP1 installed
After a single use of Windows Update, the functionality stopped working
I recently did a complete reinstall of Vista from CD, and was able t
run Windows Update again, until I received SP1.

Since then, the following occurs - I click on Start>Windows Update. Th
Windows Update window opens, but is unresponsive - I can not click o
it, the cursor changes to waiting and the canvas is empty. It stays lik
this for at least 7 hours (longest I've left it open). Right clicking o
the item in the task bar does not give a context menu.

I have to manually kill the process via Task Manager to remove th
window.

Any thoughts/advice

I think Vista still has the SoftwareDistribution folder under windows
(Not at my vista system

Try deleting this folder, no it will not hurt anything, sounds like W
is broken anyway. And then run windows updates again, if it run
properly, it will recreate this folder

You may have to disable the Automatic Updates or Windows Updat
Services

There are also 4 other services that need to be running for WU to ru
properly

I think they are,,,

Background Intelligenc
Crytographic (Something
Automatic Update
And I think one more,,,, but I can't be certain at the moment

Knew there was a folder I should play with.

Deleting that got me Windows Update to at least open. I've disable
automatic updates and I'm seeing if I can get anything out of it
Thanks!

Sidenote - I found the WindowsUpdate.log file in my Windows folde
while deleting this... there was activity while it was running, but i
doesn't seem to have any message about why it just hung there
