Vista SP2 has borked my Live Messenger

Hi,

So oddly I was only just made aware of the Vista SP2 download for X64
systems like yesterday and ever since I installed it my Live Messenger won't
work. Sign's in, goes to the little blue circle and crashes.

A quick cursory Google yields numerous pages of identical issues following
the SP2 download. Most seem to be unhelpful ramblings and a lot suggest
reinstalling Live Messenger. I did that, and I also went through the repair
process under the Control Panel but no luck.

What does everyone recommend?

Thanks.

Greetings,

Removing the Windows Live Contacts cache can sometimes fix the symptoms you're experiencing.

To do this, press the Windows key and R on the keyboard to bring up the Run box, then enter:
%userprofile%\appdata\local\microsoft
and click OK.

Scroll down and delete the Windows Live Contacts folder. Then try Messenger again.

Thanks Jonathan - it wasn't quite the right route to the folder but I found
it in the end. Unfortunately, it wasn't successful for me. Some more
digging around and I noticed that someone with the same system as me - x64
home premium, having just downloaded SP2 had the same problem. They resolved
it by making Live Messenger run as Administrator.

Frustrating that I have to run it as admin every time but at least it works.
Hopefully MS will issue an update at some point that will help but I doubt
it.

Hi,

There's no specific issue that I know of where (out of the box), admin is required.

As a guess, I suspect some other application (or maybe something in Windows) broke some
permissions for some component that Messenger makes use of.

I'd be open to helping you debug it should you ever be interested.
