Vista SP2 update disappeared!

Yesterday just before switching off I noticed that SP2 was available vi
Windows Update. As I was going to bed, I thought I would leave it unti
today to install it. When I go to Windows Update, SP2 is no longe
offered, although some other updates were. SP2 hasn't been installed
so where has it gone? Will it be offered again

Hi, this article discuses your problem. I'd just do a search of M$'s service
packs for it, provided you meet the requirements for the download.

My PC never showed SP2 on Windows Update. I don't know why. I downloaded
and installed it manually.

You made a mistake. It doesn't show on Update list for people who have
conflicting soft/hardware, it's very intelligent unlike WindowsXP and won't
force updates which are known to caus eproblems for your machine it
identified as such. You might be missing prerequisites also.

Now that you FORCED SP2, you may or may not expect problems in future,
nobody knows. Microsoft doesn't take chances with your kind of setup these
days, unlike WindowsXP where updates were more or less offered to everyone
almost the same for a given Windows version.

Maybe overnight new updates appeared which are now pre-requisre to be
installed before SP2 can be installed. Maybe you changed something in
hardware drivers o rit booted into a different configuration since last
night.

What article ?

I have seen that happen on several computers I serviced within the last week
or so. SP2 reappeared later. Windows update seems to prioritize available
updates and may temporarily bump SP2 if there are other available critical
updates. I wouldn't be too concerned about it.

Thanks for the replies. I did get an IE7 security update and a C+
redistributable update (I think) which appeared instead of SP2. Mayb
those pushed SP2 off my list. It hasn't reappeared yet. I'll wait til
then

I had been holding off installing IE8 due to some unfavourable reports
but wondered if that was what was keeping SP2 off my update lis
(despite its brief appearance)
I had read that IE8 was not a prerequisite, but having installed it
guess what? SP2 immediately appeared in my updates. So I hav
installed it now. Does it make any difference? Who knows
