Vista startup problem

Folks-
I run Vista HP/SP2. The other day after various installs, updates and
maintenance tasks I ran with no problems and ended the day by putting my
laptop into hibernate mode. The next day when I powered on, my system would
not come up...my system disk C: was corrupt. I finally got System Repair to
run and it appeared to fix and recover my C: disk to the point that I can
see my files still exist via Recovery command prompt. However when I
restart, my screen goes and stays blank (black) with my cursor usable but to
no purpose. I tried System Repair again but it tells me it can find nothing
to repair. I tried starting in safe mode and it loads two screens worth of
windows files before going to a blank (black) screen with my cursor usable
but to no purpose. The last windows file loaded is a crcdisk driver file.
Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

Yes, I ran CHKDSK. It gave an error: FVEUPDATE.EXE Index entry in index
#I30 of file 501 is incorrect. I ran it with the /f correcting the problem
and then got the results described above when attempting to start Windows.
With receipt of your message I ran CHKDSK again. The FVEUPDATE.EXE error is
back.

FVEUPDATE is part of bitlocker. Is your drive protected?

Sorry, but I am unclear as to what "protected" means...how do I check/tell?
In order for the CHKDSK /f to proceed it did require me to allow a force
dismount of another unspecified volume. My laptop is a Dell XPS 1730 with
RAID if that helps clarify anything.

I meant encrypted, used on laptops to prevent the drive being accessed if
stolen.

Run chkdsk c: /r which test the surface of the disk. It will take hours.

support encryption and I have not
requested any encryption so to the best of my knowledge my files are not
encrypted.

I ran 'chkdsk /r' from C:
Chkdsk deleted incorrect index entry for fveupdate.exe
Chkdsk recovered orphaned file fveupdate.exe
Chkdsk hung with screen frozen on step 5 of 5 verifying free space.
Last display:
49 percent complete 61,169,513 of 142,497,104 free clusters processed.

I powered off and powered on.

I ran 'chkdsk C: /r' from X:

Chkdsk recovered orphaned file fveupdate.exe
Chkdsk hung with screen frozen on step 5 of 5 verifying free space.

I powered off and powered on and ran again from X: with identical result.

At this stage it appears the disk is unrepairable. Time to backup your
files. I don't know the specifics of HPs, particulary how they system
recover, so I can't comment further.

Weird..
It does sound like it's encrypted
Virus or malware
Corruption yes, but at worst - the drive could be going bad
