vista stops working

turn on and can do anything for about 1-2 minutes then whatever task I'm
doing freezes. can run in safe mode without a problem.
had a problem a few months ago where save as didn't respond and changed
shell icon name in registry and it fixed it. thought maybe same problem
but now i'm not allowed to change shellicon name "registry editor cannot
remame shelliconold. error while renaming key."
any ideas? thanks.

I often wonder why people who get into the problem you have described don't
use System Restore more frequently. However, it's too late for you as you
changed something in your registry a considerable time ago.

A well-known cause of computer freeze can be a virus in the system. If you
have an adequate antivirus program you could run that and see what happens.
Although if the system freezes after two minutes, you're never going to get
through a/v run before this freeze occurs.

Over many years I have found that when your system begins to exhibit a few
annoying habits, it is about time to bite the bullet, back up your data as
best you can and wipe the drive. Then you have to reinstall everything, of
course. But all the annoying glitches and problems you had previously will
disappear.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince
you that you owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.
