This morning, after the usual email session- I decided to turn off my "Vista
box" and I saw that there were 11 Windows updates ready to install. So, I
chose to install those updates- the system went to that screen which says
"don't turn off computer - installing updates" or whatever----- then it got
stuck on #9. I let it sit there for an hour, then turned off the computer.
Turned it back on and got the message that the system had not been properly
turned off- that I needed to decide whether to do a safe boot or just boot
up normally- I chose the later. It came up OK- after a few minutes, I got a
pop up from the tray saying it needed to complete the installation of
updates- I let it do that- and now it seems OK. I went to Control Panel-
Security- Windows Updates and checked the history of updates section- it
showed 13 updates installed today successfully and no mention of any
unsuccessful installs. So, I think my system is now stable again- but it
gave a scare to have the system lock up on updates with no proper recourse.
I would think it better if the installation of updates routine could "know"
when there is a problem and it's stuck- then give the user some options.
I'd like to learn more about what may have happened and how to avoid this in
the future.
