I am trying to get into using tags as my new file system, but I store a lot
of PDF files. Is there any extension, or upcoming support that will allow me
to tag my PDF files as well?

I have been scouring the net looking for anything, but I have come up short
so far.

Select the PDF files in Windows Explorer, and add the tags in the Properties
bar at the bottome of the window.

No worries....hence my problem :-)

I thought I read somewhere about a shell extension that might support this,
but I haven't been able to find that information since.

The problem with tagging all files is that not all files support metadata of
this type. Since PDF is one that doesn't, you won't find a first party
solution.

That's not to say that a third party can't build some type of database to
store tags for file types that don't support tagging, but it'll be a bit of
a kludge solution.

Hi Richard,

Thank you for posting here!

As other MVPs said, Windows Vista do not support tagging the PDF file. I
think you may install the 3rd party software Adobe Reader. It will add a
PDF tab in the file properties. Then you can add the keywords via the
software as a workaround.

Also to facilitate the management of the PDF files, you may download
desktop search add-ins for Windows Vista to index even more file types,
such as Adobe .pdf files, Lotus Notes e-mail, and ZIP folders. Then you
will search and manage these files (such as PDF files) more conveniently.

For more information, you may refer:
Windows Search:

dowsvista.mspx

Add tags or other properties to a file
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...acc-4a88-bb01-

I hope that the above information can be of assistance.

What? MS should have fundamentally altered every file type that doesn't
support tagging?

For PDF, I guess you need to whine at adobe.

no.. MS should have made a database that would retain meta data even for
files that do not retain this kind of informations themeseves....
A database that would be exportable preferably in an open source format like
xml.

this file database was one of the things I believe that was planned for
longhorn (beta of vista) but was droped
along with many features that would make vista a real update to XP.
