This may not be your cup of tea, so to speak, but I recenlty purchased an
Acer. It was loaded with junk 2nd and 3rd party software that had its
tentacles hooked in all over the place. Slow boot, sluggish performance. So
I downloaded the hardware drivers appropriate to my laptop from the Acer
website and burned them to disc .. then wiped the drive and installed a
*generic* copy of Windows Vista (plain ol' vanilla Microsoft Windows - not
the recovery version nor the Acer version). Vista picked up most of the
hardware on installation, so most of the drivers I downloaded I didn't have
to use. Boots to a full settled desktop in 50-53 seconds [includes logging
in with a password]. And the performance is nice.
