I keep getting the 'Windows could not search for new updates' error 80070424.
I have spent a long time browsing the internet for a solution with no luck.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Error message when you use Windows Update or Microsoft Update Web sites to
install updates: 0x80070424
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968002/

or
Re-registered the wuaueng.dll

Apparently in Vista, you should have Register and Unregister on your context
menu whenever you right-click a dll file

I've already used that link to try and fix my problem with update but I went
through it all again http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968002/ and it's still
refusing to work. I changed a setting in my user accounts to allow me to
re-register several .dlls inclusing the one you listed below and still
nothing, my firewall is disabled my virus checker removed.. still not working.

Any more ideas please for a fix?

My guess then would most likely be that you have a virus infection or
something.

Copied from PA Bear -

"There is a very good chance are that you are seeing the affects of a
hijackware infection.

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

NB: Rename MRT.EXE to, e.g., SCANNER.EXE before running the tool!

2. Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan (only!) in Safe
Mode with Networking, if need be:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting the requested
logs in an appropriate forum, not here.

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.
