I have just installed two new wd 500 gb drives and installed OS but the
secondary HDD is detected by Device Manager and is reported as working
properly but the drive does not appear in My Computer. Solutions anyone?

Hi,

Have you partitioned and formatted any volumes on the second drive yet?
Until you do, it won't be shown in Windows Explorer. Click start and type
diskmgmt.msc, then hit <enter> to open the disk utility. Right click the
drive in question and create a partition to begin.

Even though the HDD is shown in the BIOS and as a device in Device Manager it
does not show in the rest of the computer. Both drives are identical and have
been installed properly as drive 0 and drive 1 and show as master and slave
in the BIOS. Once Vista had been installed I was set to partition and format
the secondary HDD but could not find it as I would normally within XP, so I
looked in Device Manager and it was there, but under Computer it does not
show. I tried "Search for new Hardware" to no avail.

In addition when I highlight the drive in device manager and check under
actions it only shows disable as an alternative, which means that the drive
is enabled.

This is a brand new unused disk right?

It won;t show until it has a partition on it, did you try what Rick
suggested?

Yes this is new and I tried the Rick thing but it also shows the drive as
drive 1 Unallocated but when I go up to the Volume area it is not listed so I
can action the partition and format

I don't have Vista on this machine so can't check but can you right
click on my computer and select "Manage" there should be an option for
drives in there and in that you should see the drive and be able to
create a partition and format it.

Hi,

It should show as unallocated space, and that is because it hasn't been
partitioned and formatted yet. Run diskmgmt.msc and right click the
unallocated space to use the option to create a new partition.

Sorry Charlie it must be a vista thing but Rick has found the solution for
the newcomer. But since your there Rick how can I stretch my Desktop to full
width screen and still keep the correct aspect ratio? Monitor is a 26" Acer
LCD which ran well under XP but I cant get it right in Vista. Ive tried
monitor native resolution settings, desktop appearence settings, etc. Ill
have to find if drivers are required for the monitor, any other suggestions?
I have a thread for this in Video section.
