Vista Ultimate not connecting to internet

I have read several posts regarding issues similar to mine, yet none are
exact.

I run Vista
Ultimate 64b and I was having NO trouble with my internet connection
until just recently. I turned my computer on, only to have it arrive at
a black screen and lock up. I restarted, and when I get back online it's
not connecting to the internet.
I called my ISP provider, and they sent someone out to test everything.
We concluded that my connection and modem were up and running, and he
tested his laptop on my connection and it worked. My computer is simply
having issues.
I've system restored a few times, and it's not working. I have viewed
settings to make sure nothing is being restricted, but cannot find
anything that would be preventing connection.

When I bring up my Network Connections
, it's trying to connect to a Local IP that is a default for the
computer. It gets to that connection with Limited Connectivity but will
never connect to the internet or the IP provided by my ISP. Anyone have
any ideas why this would happen so randomly? I changed no settings
whatsoever.
I do not have access to my computer as of now but I will be posting
responses asap. Thank you for any help you can give. If any specific
questions, please Email me at .

You can reset the TCP/IP on Vista to see if that gets the connection back.
Also, malware such as a virus can blick the Internet connection, so for that
too.

<http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/06/18/repair-and-reset-windows-vista-tcpip-winsock-catalog-corruption/>

Does the IP the machine has starts with 169.? If it is the 169. IP, then
that's an indication that the computer couldn't get an IP from the DHCP
server on your ISP's network, it timed out trying to get a vaild IP, and the
O/S assigned the 169. IP to the NIC. It's a sign of trouble with the
connection to the Internet.

IPconfig /all will tell you the IP the machine is using when the command is
issued at the Command Prompt.

You can also use IPconfig /release and IPconfig /renew to see if it can get
a vaild IP from the ISP..

You can try to reset the TCP/IP if all else fails. However, the network card
could be going defective , and the network cable to the computer can go bad
as well.

Check in Device Manager, to see what the Network Adaptor is up to.

To start, thanks for your responses, I appreciate the help

Yes the IP starts with 169. I've tried changing the network to Publi
and Private, neither are working, and it keeps going to a Unknow
Network with Local Access only. I've tried changing the properties t
make it search for DNS automatically, nothing seems to be working

How can I connect to the webpage with no internet connection? Is ther
a way around to get to that website and get the content I need

Every repair I try towards the IP has no effect either

under Device Manager everything seems to be correct compared to wha
posts are saying on this website

What should my Network Adaptor be up to

Try resetting your IP stack. To reset the IP stack in Vista:

Start->Programs->Accessories->Command Prompt (Run As Administrator)

At the command prompt, type:

netsh int ip reset

reboot

Thanks for your help, I will try typing that into command prompt when
return home.

At this point; I've uninstalled Windows Vista, only to find out that m
XP home disc is not downloading certain xml files (and a few others) t
successfully complete the installation. So, I'm back to reinstallin
Vista and the connection is at the same point. I'm hoping it's not m
Networking card, is there anyway to check if that's the problem beside
having to buy a new one? I need this computer up and running for final
and it's not looking good.

Again, thank you for all the help, I've been reading ideas on thi
website and others still not finding the correct solution, so pleas
keep the ideas coming

If you right-click, in Device Manager, on the Network Adaptor>Properties>It
should say if it is working OK, or not.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll check it out.

I believe there is a problem with my explorer.exe process. Everytime
try to Disable or Enable an internet connection, the Local Are
Connection window stops responding, and I have to completely end th
explorer.exe process.

This is after a complete reinstall of Windows Vista. I've been tryin
everything to get this computer connected again; including resetting m
ip stack. Please keep the suggestions coming. Here is my ipconfi
