Vista Ultimate OS is using 28GB

Hi I am sure when i installed Vista Ultimate 64Bit it was only taking up
about 10Gb in the windows folder but when I last checked it was up to
28GB is this normal. I have 2 main Hard drives which i Dual boot and i
have Vista home professional 32bit on the other one and it only has 12GB
in the windows folder.

Can anyone tell me why it has grown t be so massive and is it going to
get bigger

Could be quite normal depending on how much space is being used by System
Restore, Hibernate, and the paging file.

All versions of Windows "grow" over time. Vista seems to be way worse
than prior versions. Begin trimming it down by using Disk Cleanup
(right click on your C drive) Properties in Windows Explorer. This
gets rid of easy stuff, but keep in mind left to it's own devices
Windows is a pack rat and hoards everything, cluttering up the
Registry, writing logs, etc.. Vista by default in some versions also
makes shadow copies, which may or may not be useful depending on how
you use your computer. System Restore is another potential hard drive
hog which creates Restore Points that allows you to roll back your
system to a prior point in time. Nice feature, but if you have the
room on a large drive Vista may have accumulated many Restore Points
far back in time you'll never use which you can safely delete.

I just checked my Windows folder. It has mushroomed to a little under
18 GB and contains a bloated 59,894 files. Many files get added by
applications you install. Also if you suffered some power failures or
system hangs that forced you to shut down by simply pulling the plug
or sitting on the off switch that can leave behind temporary files
that no longer serve any purpose which also can be safely deleted.

That just scratched the surface. Rummaging around in the Windows
folder is like going into a rain forest without a machete to cut down
the overgrowth. Best to leave things along unless you known EXACTLY
why some files are there. Deleting some files will totally trash you
system and might make it unbootable.

Thanks for the reply, but regarding disc cleanup, i do it regularly and
also remove all but the last system restore, i also run CCleaner daily

Hi,

Removing restore points does not change the amount of space allocated to
this application (generally 15% of the drive volume). As a personal note, I
would suggest you keep more than just one restore point.

Correct on both counts, of course.

To add to that for the OP's benefit...

One can turn off the automatic setting of system restore points, and
still be able to set points manually. AND one can also reduce the
amount of space that the sytem will reserve for those points.

My Windows directory is 13 GB and the user directory is
4 GB. Thats about 17 for the OS.
