Vista under Bootcamp - can't wake from sleep. HELP!

Hi,

I'm running Vista Business SP2 under Bootcamp on a Macbook Pro (early
2008). I primarily use the laptop for Vista. Mostly it works okay, but
there is one serious problem which is that when it goes into sleep mode
very frequently (almost always now) it won't wake up.

Originally I saw 2 problems. The macbook pro only has 1 external LED
indicator: a white LED on the front which pulses when in sleep mode.
Sometimes when going into sleep mode, the LED would stay on at full
brightness (no pulsing) and the computer wouldn't actually turn off
although the display is off and there is no way to wake it. Whatever it
was doing it was generating a lot of heat.

I'm not seeing that happen any more, but the second problem remains and
has gotten worse. The computer will go to sleep normally, but when I
open the lid or press a keyborad button to wake it, nothing will happen.
The display remains off and nothing I can do will bring it back. The LED
turns off when I open the lid, but at this point if I close the lid the
LED turns back on but stays at full power (no pulsing). No sound comes
from the speakers when pressing keyboard buttons, although sometimes
when I first open the lid there's a little alert sound but then the
system doesn't come back.

The only way I can bring the system back is to hold down the power
button for several seconds to force a power off then turn it back again.

I've tried everything I could think off including updating all the
drivers I could find (couldn't find touchpad or chipset drivers),
disabling wake from sleep power options for all devices other than the
keyboard, disabled most of the power saving features in the power
settings, even installed the SP2 beta to see if it would help... Nothing
seems to help. At the moment I've disabled sleep and set the computer to
hybernate instead. This resolves the issue but startup times are slower
and I get a little paranoid about shutting the lid and picking up the
laptop immediately since the hard disk has to spin for a while wile its
dumping to the hybernation file.

I've read some similar problems using OS X on the Apple discussion
forums but I've not been able to replicate the problem on OS X so I'm
not sure if it might be a hardware issue that's triggered by Vista/Vista
drivers or if it's actually a Vista issue. Of course Apple support
hasn't been much help. They won't support anything Windows related so
unless I can replciate the problem under OS X they're not going to help.
I have wondered if it might be related to the faulty Nvidia graphics
chip problem but I don't know if that would make sense since it happens
while waking from sleep, not during a high temperature condition. I've
not had this happen any time other than when waking from sleep.

Anyone have any idea what the problem might be? Is there any hope?

Thanks!

magritte,

Had the sleep problem with my Vista Ultimate SP1 desktop. The only
difference was that I was able to wake it by quickly pressing the power
button. Still annoying though. I fixed the problem by running the System
File Checker (sfc) commands. Give it a try.

* Select Start > Run > type sfc /scannow
* Click OK, scan should begin verifying the files are not corrupted
* Restart the PC when completed

You shouldn't need your CD with Vista. Also, note the space after the c in
sfc.

Don't take this wrong, but running a Beta version of an OS on an
unsupported hardware platform is living large by any standard!

LOL

I hear you, there are certainly those who would have (and still might)
respond that way!

Arthur: All my life I've had this strange feeling that there's something
big and sinister going on in the world.
Slartibartfast: No, that's perfectly normal paranoia. Everyone in the
universe gets that.
