For a couple of weeks updates on Vista (x86) does no longer work. I can see
the available updates but installing ALWAYS ends with 800800C1. I have tried
so far:
1. deleteing & recreating "...\SoftwareDistribution" tree,
2. cleared Temp-files etc.

No chance no updates anymore!
- I want to go out of this state (without reinstalling)
BTW: Vista (Genue) is Activated for 2 months now and updates where
working.....

Thanks for any hint
Gerhard

Actually NO!
I tried several things (e.g. remove antivirus, turn off UAC) - same situation.
BTW: It still does download Defender updates but no others.
Looks like I have to restore an image backup from January - or new install....
--> I hate this!!!!

G.H.

Spoke with some folks inside MS who are trying to help me with this. The
current path we are embarking on involved whether checking if some files are
corrupted. IE running sfc/scannow from the command line in an adminstrator
account. If you are lucky (I was not) that will repair the file from the
cache. FYI have your install disk handy it may ask you for it. If it tells
you it cannot repair look in c:\windows\logs\sbc\sbc.log and at the bottom
see if it is showing hash errors on files. (Mine did). When I get a chance
tonight I am going to copy over those files from a working system and see if
that does the trick.
FYI

SUCCESS!
The offending file in question was SMIPI.dll
You can get it off of the vista install disk (just search for it I forget
the path) or another working system. It's under
C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_non e_07289f4cca5f6990
yes that is a real folder name (jeesh).
You'll have to take ownership under properties>security>advanced to actually
copy over it. Once it's replaced windows update ran fine.
Had a bunch of other corrupted files that I haven't dealt with yet but this
was the cause. Suggest running sfc/scannow anyway as that might have fixed
something else.
Good Luck!
