Vista Update crashed the computer

Dell Inspiron 1420, one year old. 2 gigs ram, Vista Home Premium.
It's been unused for two weeks and when I started it up it installed the
February updates and restarted. It now comes up with: configuring updates:
stage 3 of 3 - 0% complete. Then it says shutting down and shuts down. Then
it restarts. This process just loops until I turn off via power button.
All the drive tests and windows tests with the Dell DVD show normal. It even
says it boots normally
I have tried to do every startup option with the F8 key.
System Restore even from the Dell DVD crashes with a blue screen.
Stop: c000021a {Fatal Sytem Error}
The NT initial command process system terninated unexpectidly with a status
of -x0000001 (c0x00000000 0x00000000)
The system has been shut down.

I shutter at the thought of calling Dell.
I would rather not wipe out the hard drive with a complete reinstall. I
need to get the files from the Documents.
Does anyone have any idea what I can do to stop this install so the computer
will boot?
I do have a SATA drive enclosure I can put the disk in so I can delete
whatever files that could cause this.

I know Microsoft will help for free on SP1 issues but what about Windows
Updates?
Thanks.

This may be related to SP1. Is Vista SP1 installed or not? <=JUST a
question, not a recommendation!

The update is not installed successfully, you receive a message, and the
computer restarts when you try to install an update in Windows Vista:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949358

A software update is available for the Windows Vista installation software
feature:

Hello,
Had exactly the same problem you have and solved it the following way (with
success)
My system is in French so wording of screen text is translated but it should
not be a real problem:

1. long holding of the on/off button so that the computer shuts down
2. click the on button and hold immediately key F9 and keep your finger on
it.
3. You will get a screen where after the first paragraph you have the option
saying : Repair your computer
4. Highlight it using the up/down keys on your keyboard and press Enter
5. A new window will open offering various options, choose the Option :
Restore my computer to a previous date
6. (It works in save mode so do not wonder if the layout is not so
beautifull as normally), you get a new window asking you to choose the date
at which to restore your computer. Tick on the lower left case to see
entries older then 5 days.
7. New window with a list of dates and actions taken
8. Choose the latest automatic restore point made by your Dell computer
before these grrrrrr windows updates tried to install. So probably a date
early in february.
9. Proceed with ok, or other button saying "go on". No worries, none of your
documents will be touched by that operation.
Then relax and wait until it is finished (can take about 1/4 hour or so).
Then the computer will restart normally. Yeppeeeeee !
Next: Go to Configuration Panel and look where to change the instructions on
how your computer should handle windows update and choose something else
then the automatic install of windows updates. You do not want to get back
to that bloody situation.
I choose the option: notify me of available updates but let me choose
when/if I want to make them.

Anyway, when you then have the windows saying you have windows updates on
proposal, click on see list and there ... well untick anything which is not
"kosher", for my part and for the time being, I will download and install
NOTHING but the windows defender updates.

Good luck
Cheers
Viv

Thank you very much for the link to Knowledge base
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949358 That fixed the boot up problem
perfectly.
It looks like the Cumulative Security for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows
Vista (KB961260) is the problem. It shows pending in the update history.
Again, Thanks, I owe you one. If you ever get to St. Louis I'll buy you a
beer.

No beers until you answer my question: Is Vista SP1 installed or not? (You
post here using OE on a WinXP SP2 machine; If you posted using Windows Mail
in Vista, I'd be able to tell if SP1 was installed.)

Has KB961620 installed (yet)?

Compared to you I know nothing about computers, totally new to them. I was
looking for help relating to should I install windows optional updates and i
came across your problem. I bought Acer Window Vista and reading what you
wrote was as if I was re-reading what I wrote to Acer and Windows. Mine was 3
months old. Used it for emails only because I did not know how to work
anything else. I was typing email and all of a sudden blue screen came on,
then a black screen with computer talk. Then windows repair and fixed, back
and forth this went on and on. Windows kept telling me to update an unknown
device. I check device manager and sure enough unknown device was listed, how
the hell did a unknown device get there is behond me. Got upset and took
computer back to store. They fixed the mother board. Pluged it in and the
same thing again. I just let it sit for weeks.

The store fixed nothing. Windows Restore help could not locate unknown
device. I stared at screen when i did turn it on again and saw Acer help. 5
selections and just guessing I pressed restore. Ferg, I actually had a new
computer again. Acer put everything on another diver.

I installed an update. All hell broke. Shut down, blue screen, black screen,
nothing help. I got all those computer numbers you spoken about.

The rest of your message is computer talk and when I press restore to
factory default I did lose little stuff. In your case you have important
files I guess.

I just wanted you to know I did have your problem too. George

Yes the Dell is a Vista Home Premium SP1 machine. I had to use my XP
machine to post hrere since the Vista Computer would not boot to Windows.
The holdup is KB961260, it was the one that said pending after I got the
machine to boot. I have done the remaining updates but I am afraid to try
the Cumulative update to IE7 again. I have done cleanups, defrag, full
chkdsk and removed all resore points other that the most recent.
Do you think there is something else I should do before I give the update a
try?
Thanks
Mike

Can you tell me if the machine came with SP1 preinstalled, Mike, or if you
installed it via Windows Update after you got the computer?

Moving on...

From your previous reply, I assume you downloaded/installed the KB927387
patch. If so, you should be able to install KB961620 without encountering
any problems. In fact, I'm surprised that it hasn't been installed already
by Automatic Updates (unless you managed to hide it).
