ProCELL computer, Pentium Dual Core
Windows Vista Home Premium, 32-bit
Automatic daily update.
I wanted to restart the computer & allowed installing of updates. The
process would not go beyond "Configuring updates Stage 3 of 3 - 0% complete.
Do not turn of computer."
1. After 1 hour, I switched off and restarted. Could not get beyond same
message.
2. Tried "Start in Safe Mode": whizzes through the start up (without any
chance for me to intervene), restarts automatically - and back to same
"Configuring" message. Restarts automatically again & again, but does not
advance.
3. Tried again, same result.
How can I get beyond this loop? (I'm posting from another computer)

Hello RB,

I'm not sure about this--but it looks promising--try
<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949358>

The update is not installed successfully, you receive a message, and the
computer restarts when you try to install an update in Windows Vista

Please let us know what fixes the problem or if the pяoblem remains

Are you running Vista, Vista SP1, or Vista SP2 currently?

Description of the Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 installation
software feature update released April 28, 2009:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/955430

^^^ Has KB955430 been installed yet? ^^^

The update is not installed successfully, you receive a message, and the
computer restarts when you try to install an update in Windows Vista:

I tried your suggestion. The site proposes 3 methods:
1. Use Vista install disk & its Repair feature. When I reach the Systems
Restore page, I'm told the computer's system disk has no Restore Points
(though I was sure it had...). So on to next method.
2. Start in Safe Mode & use System Restore. "Last Known Good Configuration"
brings me back to the same old "Configuring Updates..." message & no result;
"Safe Mode" the same (I can't reach the Start moment). "Safe Mode with
Command Prompt": the screen shows the registry files loading, but I don't get
access to the Command Prompt. (NB Ihave the Service Packs installed) But ...
3. Rename the Pending.xml file & edit the registry. I'm not sure my computer
skills go this far. It's risky...
I don't mind doing a new installation, BUT I cannot risk losing my recent
files.

Can you suggest any other approaches?
1. To resolving the problem of completing or shortcutting the Update
procedure. Or
2. Extracting my data files in order to do a clean install.

Thanks!

I think I'm up to SP2. Anyway, I use automatic install update and check from
time to time for optional updates. No server for sure. As I can't complete
the start up process, I don't know how to find out about which updates are
installed.

The second site you refer to is the one I tried, unsuccessfully.

Other proposals?

No, I got it in December 2007 & have since reinstalled it (probably once):
Windows Vista Home Premium OEM DVD, "includes Windows Anytime Upgrade"
As far as service packs and updates are concerned, I try to keep up to date
through automatic updating and optional updates (except those for programmes/
functionalities I don't use). I don't keep track of which updates are
installed - almost daily!

And why did you have occasion to reinstall Vista? Did you do a Repair
Install (AKA In-place Upgrade) or did you format & do a clean install?

HOW TO check your Windows version:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/up...ckversion.aspx

If KB955430 is installed, it will be listed in Installed Updates.

The crash was last year, through (?compatibility, ?driver) problems with Nero
which prevented the CD/DVD ROM working. I don't think it was an Update
problem. Pretty sure I did a format and clean install.
As I can't reach Start, I can't access the OS data.
Note that I am also running a Digital Video Recording System (with 4 cameras
running fulltime, storage on HD partition D) which surely does not help - the
DVRS prefers XP SP2 to Vista.
The reason I shut down the computer in the first place today was to get
round a problem with removing a memory stick. The message said that as a
programme was still using files, I should not remove it - although all
programmes were closed (perhaps Windows Photo Gallery had discovered the
photos there and was indexing them).

It looks pretty hopeless to me. As I have an OEM Vista, MS Romania don't
offer help. So in the morning I'll go to my IT shop and get them to extract
all my data files etc (if they can - with Method 3); then do a new clean
install - with my data files on a separate partition this time.

I'll check here before I go to see if you've found the miracle solution.
Thanks for your help and support, always good ito have someone to share with
in a crisis!

Hi I have the exact same experience with my Vista 32bit home edition..!!
1st time "auto-update" crashed my Vista, there was NO WAY to get it going
again!
I had to uninstall the harddisk, and put it in another Vista machine to get
my files! ..And then a total Reinstall...
I was stupid enough (Not aware?)to leave autoUpdate ON! ..
So 2. time I just wanted to close down Vista late at night, and I got into
the SAME situation once more!
Vista Stinks!
I have an XP machine running the exact SAME programmes, an Windows7 RC
machine running the exact SAME programmes... No problems here! ..But this
Vista OS is NO GOOD! Fails occur again and again!...
Only on the Vista based komputer.

A Recovery CD gave me an opportunity til choose a restore point this Second
time!
But NOW I have turned AutoUpdate OFF.. promting me FIRST, and I want to
Choose! Myself.
I chose ONE essential Vista Update file, leaving 7 security updates behind.
Trying only this essential Vista update ALONE .. and again! .. The Update did
not succeed!
So even manually, no way!?...

Any Vista "Lover", who has ANY functioning solution???
Microsofts solutions are awful! ... and more af them pulls You through a lot
af hours editing the Registry and so on, only to find, it DOES NOT WORK?!? ...

Why produce and promote a OS, that is WORSE than the one it is supposed to
superseed? ... Bahh!

Any GOOD suggestions!?
Microsoft does NOT seem to be able to solve it themselves!...!
