Vista windows update worked fine. I had my computer added to our company
domain and now when i go to window update it says:

(link butto) Check for Windows updates

and below it says:

you receive updates: managed by system administrator
(link) check online for updates from microsoft

when i click on the top button I always receive the error 80072EFD

when i click on the bottom link i receive updates ok (i think)

I asked out IT dept and they said they do not block users from getting
windows updates and that there is nothing in the policies that should change
my settings.

I am the first Vista computer added to our XP based domain. I can not find
out how to turn off administrator control of updates to the standard windows
update.

I do have admininistrator rights on this machine.

Help would be appreciated.

When accessing the Windows Update site, you receive the 0x80072EFD error
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=16&ln=en

You should also try the steps here:

When searching for available updates on the Windows Update site, you
receive the 0x8024402C, 0x80240030 or 0x8024502d error
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=26&ln=en

You might need to use proxycfg.exe (see link above) to either set
or remove a proxy server configuration:

Open a command prompt (Start/Run and then "cmd.exe" without the
quotes").

Run this command to see what proxy configuration WU uses:

proxycfg

If you don't have a proxy, you will need status

Direct access (no proxy server).

If it reports anything else, to set direct access:

proxycfg -d

To get more help on proxycfg:

proxycfg -?

The links in your response all generate a 404 error, file not found so i can
not evaluate them and vista can not find proxycfg.exe

i did read microsoft's comments about adding their site to your trusted
zones which i did but it still doesn't work.

Try these links:

Windows Update error 80072efd
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...a29271033.mspx

You may receive an "Error 0x80072EE2," "Error 0x80072EE7," "Error
0x80072EFD," "Error 0x80072F76," or "Error 0x80072F78" error message when you
try to use the Windows Update Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941/en-us

0x80072EFD
ERROR_INTERNET_

CANNOT_CONNECT
The web server is not running or the web server is running on a different
port or the proxy is unreachable probably because of incorrect IE proxy
settings of the user. If the user is able to download the URL via IE and
cannot download through BITS then it is definitely a BITS problem. If the
user has set autoproxy detection wpad should resolve to the machine that has
the autoproxy script.

You may receive an error message when you search for available updates on
the Windows Update Web site or on the Microsoft Update Web site

I very much doubt what your IT department have told you. I strongly suspect
that they have Group Policy to set a Web Proxy, or something similar, and
that is what is what is preventing you from receiving updates.

They might also have Group Policy to configure a WSUS server instead of the
public Microsoft ones.

I noticed that when i log on locally (not part of the domain) i am also
unable to update vista. So, does the group policy effect both domain and
local settings?

I have admin rights on this machine. I do not have the group policy editor
on this machine.

I have looked through the registry extensively and i found this section
under HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windowsup date\:

WUserver reg_sz http://38.118.50.200
WUStatusServer reg_sz http://38.118.50.200

If i type these into my browser i can not access this site.

The next level in this section is \AU

AUOptions reg_dword 0x000000 (0)
Detection freguency (22)
detectionfrequency enabled (1)
NoAutoUpdate (0)
UseWUserver (1)

I can not find a description of these keys to know what to change to. I do
know that in the AUoption under:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Win dowsUpdate\AutoUpdate
the value is:

AUOptions reg_dword 0x000004 (4)
configversion is (1).

Still looking for a solution. Thanks.

You can try forcing a detection but the following was written for Windows XP

Force a detection by running gpedit.msc to configure the SUS server
location. Configure the intranet Microsoft Update Service Location policy.
Set the automatic updates policy to Not Configured. After setting the
automatic updates policy to Not Configured, you can turn the service on and
off by using the Control Panel. Start the tool in the Control Panel or use
the Automatic Updates tab in Windows XP, set the option as desired, clear the
Enable Automatic Updates check box, and then click Apply to apply the change.
Within a few seconds, click to enable automatic updates and then click OK to
force a detection cycle. Verify the changes by checking the registry key
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
WindowsUPdate\Autoupdate.Verify that the AUState value is 2; check the
DetectionStartTime value, which should be approximately the time of the last
used automatic updates. The value is deleted after the detection cycle occurs
(5 to 10 minutes). Finally, view the logfile for entries.
http://www.examcram2.com/articles/ar...&seqNum=5&rl=1

If the auoptions value is changed from 4 to 1, I believe it will disable
anti-virus/firewall. Known charateristic of Win32/Fisec Famil
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Win dowsUpdate\Autoupdate\AUOptions = '1'

Hello, I seem to be having the same problem - I am running Vista Business on
my notebook. Updates worked fine unitl I joined the domain at my company.

Have any of the steps above resolved the issue?

Hi. I had the same problem. Cannot upload windows update when laptop was
joined in the domain. Our administrator said that it IS really because of the
group policy and it will work if I try to download updates in our network.

But since I'm always at the client (and I never connect to our network), I
tried to find a way to solve this.

Anyway this is how I solved this problem. I changed the value of the
registry key UseWUserver
(HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windowsu pdate\AU) from 1 to 0.
From what I understand, if this is set to 1, it uses the custom server
defined in WUServer and WUStatusServer.

Good luck
