Vista Update has computer turning itself on and off continously

I rebooted a couple of hours ago after accepting Microsofts Updates, an
ever since then the computer has been turning itself on and of
continuosly (I am typing this on another computer). The computer say
1) Please wait, then 2) Configuring updates, then 3) Shutting down an
keeps doing this ad nausem. I have powered the computer off and back o
again, and it asks if I want to do a Safe Start - I say yes and the sam
thing happens again. I have gone into the setup menu and tried t
change and few minor things, but nothing helps

I would appreciate any ideas anyone has
