Vista Updates 8024D00A

Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit, installed Feb 2007
NON-RC installation disk.
At that time, I had turned off Windows updates automatic feature.
New system
Workgroup, NOT Domain

I tried to manually obtain updates, but received error code 8024D00A

Windows Help suggested that I might have IE set to use a proxy server. I
verified that the computer is not set to use a proxy server.

I also tried as "Administrator". Same error message.

I tried using "Windows Update" as well as manually going to
www.microsoft.com/updates [ which instructed me to use the "Windows Update"
utility.

I am using Vista's firewall.

I hope you can help me.

Click start and type Windowsupdate.log and hit <enter> to open the log.
Copy/paste the content from the bottom (end) of the log from the most recent
visit into a response.

I think I am hosed. I received Windows Ultimate 32 bit from Microsoft when
I attended the official Microsoft Launch Party, Jan 2007.

Hi Wiley,

The answer is in this line:

Client version: Core: 6.0.5840.16384

Which indicates this a beta version, as I think you now suspect. The beta
versions are no longer supported, you'll need to purchase a final product.
The beta builds generally installed Vista Ultimate, and you *can* use the
upgrade version to get to the final release. Any other version will require
a full version and a clean install.

Rick, he can buy/use *any* upgrade version of Vista. But, if the beta version
he has installed is Ultimate, he must purchase the Ultimate Upgrade in
order to do an in-place-upgrade. Otherwise, he will have to do a clean install.

To add..your version is a pre-RTM version that was issued in November, post beta, post RC1, and post RC2.

Windows Updates were first shut off, then Windows Defender Updates. The latter occurred about the second week of June. The difference between the beta, RC1 and RC2 versions and your pre-RTM version is the limited use which applies to the beta, RC1 and RC2 does not apply to yours. Your version does not expire but it will not update Windows or Defender, nor can any manual downloaded updates be installed(they perform version checking too).

Your version which is Vista Ultimate, qualifies only for the Vista Ultimate Upgrade version if you decide to upgrade to the RTM version. You can not use other upgrade versions.

And please do keep in mind...yours was free, no expiration but no guarantee of functionality with the services that are currently unavailable.

The saga continues, but I suspect that I will have to purchase an update
disk or upgrade key.

Only one option is available as a route for an upgrade - Vista Ultimate upgrade

On the other hand any full retail version can be used to perform a clean install after wiping the drive of the existing Vista.

I don't believe you can purchase only the upgrade key, since you need media and can't upgrade Ultimate to Ultimate.
