Vista Updates - Help on this Epic Fail?

'Kay... so I am running Vista Home Premium on my Gateway Laptop. I can't
install any updates, for some reason unknown to me. I usually get an error
code that isn't listed anywhere in this god-forsaken electronic world. Sorry,
I can't remember it at the moment and I don't know how to find it in Vista.
-_- But today my laptop cheerily told me I had 40-some-odd updates to
install. Windows Update has been "Preparing to Install" for about 4 hours.
Maybe this is the same thing that happens every time I try to shut down using
the OS instead of holding the power button? Endless "Preparing to Install"?
Anyway, I would completely love any help... seeing as how I am seriously
hating Microsoft right now. Anyway, I probably need to give more info on my
issue, but honestly I have no clue as to what to post. >_<
