I have an issue with Vista Home Premium. I was attempting to run the Upgrade
Advisor (running Vista Home Premium) and it crashes. Is this normal behavior?

Now what do you think? An upgrade advisor that crashes? Do you think that
is normal behavior?

If you do, then you need to format your machine and quickly run to Ubuntu.
Vista will be too complicated for you!

Umm why would you be running the Vista Upgrade Advisor when you already have
Vista?

Duh! The MS page to DL it says it *is* compatible with Vista!

I used it myself to see if any third party software/drivers might prevent
SP1, and I found that I needed new software/drivers for my router that were
'more' Vista compatible than what I had installed.

No, it should work, but it is supposed to just tell you that your computer
can run Vista, whIch you already know.

Make sure you have all the patches/updates and newest drivers for all your
hardware, and if you still have problems then you might have a bigger issue.

The Vista Upgrade Advisor is intended to be run on computers running
Windows XP, and is used to determine whether or not your computer will
run Windows Vista. You are already running Vista Home Premium, so there
is no need to run the advisor.

I figured sarcasm might get some response. Of course this isn't normal
behavior, however I see a millions issues like this posted about Vista with
zero answers. For now, it looks like no one including Microsoft have
solutions beyond formats and reinstall everything and hope for better results.

This seriously makes software development increasingly difficult. I suppose
I could only get away with ColdFusion on Ubuntu but none of my clients use
Ubuntu.

Well... I am trying to setup a portable development environment. Currently I
am running Vista Home Premium which works with most of the pieces I need
(ColdFusion, .NET, MYSQL, etc...) however there are unanswered issues
regarding the installation of SQL Server 2005 or 2008 (really screwed up user
management issues). I ran the upgrade advisor in consideration of going from
Home Premium to Ultimate. I don't really expect there to be an issue, however
Vista keeps showing up with new and unusual features...

Strange thing is, I have all the patches/update/kludges that MS puts out. On
the occasional crash/freeze/host proccess issue, I'll get a notification that
the issue is a known bug and fixed by a specific patch. Upon the attempt to
install the patch, I'll get another message indicating that this patch does
not apply to my system.

Please note on MS it states:
"The Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor will help you to determine if your
Windows XP-based PC can run Windows Vista. You can also use the Upgrade
Advisor to determine if your Windows Vista-based PC is ready for an upgrade
to a more powerful edition of Windows Vista."

and

"The Upgrade Advisor works with 32-bit versions of Windows XP and Windows
Vista."
